798,982. Gun barrels. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Nov. 26, 1956 [April 24, 1956], No. 36066/56. Class 119 A gun barrel, e.g. for a shot gun.or rifle, comprises a barrel liner 1 with its chamber portion 3 and shoulder portion 4 a force fit in a chamber sleeve 8 so that a neck 7 of the sleeve is in contact with the shoulder 4, the barrel liner 1 being surrounded by layers of reinforcing glass fibres 13 impregnated with a resin binder. The exterior of the reinforcing layers may be covered with a separate layer of resin coating or with a metal, e.g. aluminium, sleeve 15. The chamber sleeve 8 has a threaded end 9 which is screwed into the receiver of the gun or the end portion of the sleeve may be secured to the gun by cross pins. The liner 1 may be made of a tough and corrosion resistant steel, or of aluminium or an alloy thereof or of electroformed nickel, chromium, iron or alloys when highly polished surfaces and corrosion resistance are desired. The glass fibres may be in the form of thread wound tightly and in overlapping layers over the liner or in the form of tape or cloth or in the form of staple fibres applied in a slurry or liquid resinforming material. The liner and sleeve may be given any desired heat treatment prior to assembly.
