IMPRovED BARREL 0R oAsK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,863, dated September 11, 1866.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. CARVER, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of lVlassachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Barrels or Gasks; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical section of a barrel as provided with my improvement.
The said barrel has arranged within it concentrically an inner barrel or vessel, B, made of tinned iron or iron plate plated with zinc or some other suitable anti-corrosive metal or material, the form of the said inner vessel being such as to cause it to iit-to the inner surface of the wooden barrel incasin g it.
Inside of the vessel B, and against a washer or piece of india-rubber or leather, a., or its equivalent, placed against one end of the vessel, I arrange and tix a block, C, of wood, the sanne being to receive a screw-plug, D, which, previously to being screwed into a female screw, s, made through they block Gand the contiguous end of the vessel B, is to be inserted in an india-rubber or leather washer, b, and a metallic washer, c. The screw-plug is to have a head, d, to bear against the outside washer, c. The head of the barrel is to have a round hole, f, made in it to receive the washers and the head of the screw, and allow them to be pressed together and up to the head ofthe vessel B. A faucet provided with a shoulder to bear against the metallic washer may be used in lieu of the screw-plug.
The purpose of the block of wood C is to enable the screw-plug to be used with themetallic washers and the elastic washers or pieces of rubber to form a tight joint at the discharging-opening of the vessel B.
The said vessel B constitutes a tight lining to the barrel-.that is, such as will prevent leakage through the joints or pores of its staves or heads.
I ani aware that it is not new to place within a barrel a glass vessel so as to fill, or nearly fill, the interior of the barrel; therefore I lay no claim to such.
What I claim as my invention isl. The combination as well as the arrangement of the screw or faucet receiving block G with the metallic vessel B, or the same and the barrel encompassing such vessel.
2. The combination as well as the arrangement of the rubber washers, or their equivalents, and the metallic washer with the block C and the vessel B, or the same and the barrel A, the said washers being to forni, with the head of the vessel B and with a faucet, as described, a tight joint at the ajutage ofthe vessel B.
3. The improved manufacture of barrel as made of the wooden barrel A and the liningvessel B, made of tinned or plated iron, as specified, arranged together as set forth.
