Description

'the same, substantially as represented.
PATENT FFIGE.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH, OF JERSEY CITY, NEI/V JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,672, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH, of Jersey Oity, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Faucet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure l being a side view of the faucet.; Fig.2,a central longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the same in a plane indicated by the line am; Fig. 4, a top view ofthe faucet.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
In this invention the barrel A of the faucet is closed by a spout, B, which delivers the liquid at the discharge, the outer end, a, of the barrel turning down at right angles, and the upper portion, b, ofthe diseharge-spoutts over The spout has a movement up and down on the nozzle a of the barrel to close and open the faucet. Vhen the spout is raised a packing-disk, d, therein closes tight against the lower end of the nozzle a of the barrel, below the dischargeoritice c of the spout, as shown in Fig. 2.
This packing may be a simple piece of cork, readily inserted, and replaced at'any time.
In closing the faucet the spout B has to be raised and held tightly against the end of the barrel. To accomplish this Iemploy a sliding wedge, c, whose wedge-wings g g project at its sides and fit into wedge-notches L h in the inner surfaces ofears F F,which project upward from the spout B. When the wedge is pushed back it draws the spout closely up and closes the faucet, and to open the faucet the wedge is drawn forward, as indicated by red lines in the drawings.
By employing a spring, fi, the wedge may g be sprung back of itself, and thus close the faucet automatically.
The wedge is "operated by means of a head, j', as shown.
This faucet is very cheap in construction, requiring Very little nishing ot' the parts. It is also effectual and durable in action, and is a perfectly-workin g self-closing faucet.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The spout B, closing around the end. of the barrel A,aud provided with a packingdisk, d, in combination with the barrel, arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
'2. The wedge c, either with or without the spring ,in combination with the spout B, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH.
