Description

ATEN
JOHN L. DELANY, OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,635, dated December 3, 1872. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. DELANY, of Huntsville, in the county of Walker and in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Cans; and 'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
i exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing'and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spout attachment for cans, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a can with my spout attachment on the same and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached views of separate parts of my-spout attachment.
A represents a can used to contain oil or any other liquid, and is provided with a nozzle, 13, havingserew-threads on its outer side. This nozzle in the usual cans is open entirely at the top, but in my case this "nozzle is provided with a top plate, at, having a central aperture of the same size as the lower end of the spout. Over the nozzle B is placed a screw-cap, G, the top of which has a central hole for the passage of the spout D, and this spout is around its lower end provided with a flange, b. The spout D is passed through the hole in the cap O, and two washers, d d, of leather or other suitable material, are inserted inthe cap, one above and one below the flange b, so that when the cap is screwed down on the nozzle the joint will be perfectly tight and no leakage occur. By making the spout loose in this manner it may be turned to either side, as desired. The nozzle may be entirely closed in various ways, either by using the ordinary screw-cap without a hole, or by inserting a solid washer the screw-cap G, spout 1) with flange b, and
washers (Z d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of June, A. D. 1872.
JOHN L. DELANY.
