WELLS. PAUGETJ Patented'Deo. 20, 1892.
n a M00 1 M WM a A/ mum Wt NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FRANK SANFORD OWELLS, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
FAUCET.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,401, dated December 20, 1892.
Application filed April 30, 1892. Serial No. 431,292- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SANFORD Ow- ELLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morrison, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of faucet partlyin section. Fig.2 is a side view of the plug. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of same taken on line line w. an. Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of same taken on line w. w. and Fig. 5 is a section taken on line y. y. Fig. 2.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in faucets, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as hereinafter specified.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective faucet, consisting of two parts, so constructed and united as to form a perfectly tight joint without the use of washers, springs, packing, or other devices.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main portion, body, or casing of the faucet, having the threaded tap'B for connection with a barrel or other package. In the outer end portion of the body A is a cylindrical chamber or passage 0, communicating with the passage in the tap, by the passage O.
D designates a cylindrical plug, slightly tapering, or diminishing in diameter from the outer end inwardly. Said plug is inserted in the chamber or passage 0, as shown forming a close joint therewith by means of screwthreads at near its outer end engaging similar threads in the end portion of said passage. In the inner or lower end of said plug is an aperture or chamber 5, into which leads from one side a passage 0, through the wall of the plug. 011 the outer or upper end of the plug is the handle H.
When the faucet is to be opened, the plug is turned untilthe passagec is brought to register withthe passage 0. To;close,a partial rotation is given the plug until its solid wall is brought over the mouth of the passage 0'. The plug being slightly tapered, is loosened somewhat in the passage 0, and to prevent the pressure from causing the liquid to ooze out at the upper end of the plug, I form a surrounding groove or depression 01 therein just below the screwthreaded portion (1. Connecting the groove or depression 01 with the mouth of the passage 0 is a groove or channel g in the side of the plug. The groove d serves to collect all liquid which is forced upwardly, and conducts it back into the plug by the channel g.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A faucet having a tapering plug, said plug having a threaded portion thereon for engagement with the body or casing of the faucet, an opening or passage through said plug, and a surface groove communicating with said opening, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the body portion or casing having the passage therethrough and the chamber in its outer portion, of the tapered plug engaging said chamber, said plug having a handle formed on its upper end, an opening or passage through its inner end, a screw-threaded portion for engagement with the casing, a surrounding groove below said threaded portion, and a channel connecting said groove and the opening through said plug, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK SANFORD OWELLS. Witnesses: HENNY SAUER, a
