Description

(No Model?) 7 F. R. BUTTERFIELD.
I BUNG. No. 567 563. "Patented SeptJS, 1896.
ATENT FFICE.
FINLEY R. BUTTERFIELD, OF
CONCORD, NEl/V HAMPSHIRE.
BUNG.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,563, dated September 8, 1896..
Application filed April 24, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FINLEY R. BUTTER- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrim ao and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs; and I do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to bungs which may be readily removed without the necessity of pounding the staves, which results in more or less injury to the barrel.
The objects of the invention are to provide a bung which may be easily set or removed and one which when used in a barrel containing effervescing liquids will become more tightly sealed from the pressure from within the barrel, and one which will require but little labor in finishing and will be economical of construction.
The inventionconsists in the various novel features of construction, as fully set forth in the following specification and claims, and clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same, of which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved bung complete, Fig. 2 being a detailed plan view of the bung-lining. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. i is a detailed broken elevation of the bung. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bung.
Corresponding letters designate like parts in all the views.
A represents the metal bung-lining, which is made a little tapering, as shown, and provided with an external thread a for turning into a bung-hole, and with an external annular flange at its top. The interior of said lining A is bowl-shaped, as shown at a, and the opening at its bottom is so rounded as to make it slightly larger in diameter at its extreme lower edge, as seen at a This form of bottom opening is a very important feature in my invention, as will be pointed out in this specification. Slightly below the top of the bung-lining A is provided an internal flange (L in which is formed the slots a and the under surface of said flange is spirally in- Serial No. 588,879. (No model.)
clined on opposite sides between said slots, as
. seen in Fig. 3.
flange, and at the proper point below .the
flange b of the bung are formed 011 opposite sides the projections 12, which drop through said slots of and engage the lower'spirally-inclined surfaces of the flange a when the bung is rotated by reason of the gasket C, secured by the screw 0 to the bottom of the bung, which gasket is bowl-shaped and bears hard against the interior bowl-shaped portion of the lining, as seen in Fig. 1, and by reason of the peculiar rounded surface of the bottom opening in said lining the edge of the gasket has a tendency to spread by the internal pressure of the gas from any effervescing liquid in the barrel, which greatly increases the sealing efficiency of the bung The gasket or plug Chas at its top a circular projection, which fits into the groove 5 formed in the bottom of the bung B, and thus the gasket is kept in a position concentric with said bung.
The bung is provided with a socket in its top in which to fit a wrench or key for turning the same, as seen at 6 Figs. 1, 4, and 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A bung-hole lining having at its top an external flange and slightly belowits top an internally projectin g flange the under surface of which is spirally inclined on opposite sides and slots formed in the thinnest portion of said flange, and a bowl-shaped bottom opening and a bung provided with projections for engaging the under side of said internal flange and adapted to seat itself in and close the bottom opening of said lining, and an annular flange'at its top to exclude dirt.
2. A bung-hole lining provided with an internally-projecting flange located nearits top, the under surface of said flange being spirally inclined on opposite sides, slots arranged diametrically opposite through the thinnest 'portion of said flange, the interior of said lining being bowl-shaped and provided with a bottom opening having its edge rounded, and a bung provided with projections for engaging the under side of said flange, and a bowlshaped rubber gasket secured to the bottom of said bung, all substantially for the purpose set forth.
A bung-lining being internally bowlshaped and externally threaded and provided With an external flange at its top an internally-projecting flange near its top provided With slots at opposite sides the under surface of said flange being spirally inclined between said slots, and a bun g having an annular flange at its top and projections on opposite sides and below said flange adapted to enter the slots and engage the under side of the internal flange of said lining, and a rubber plug seeured to the bottom of said bung fitting the bowl-shaped interior of said lining.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
