Description

T. M. COF FIN.
Faucet. No. 58,600. I Patented Oct. 9,1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THOMAS M. OOFFIN, OF PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,600, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. GOFFIN, of Plymouth, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construc tion, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1,-1's a side elevation of a faucet illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of my invention is to contrive a faucet the handle of which shall be the outer end of the valve-rod or prime mover of the valve, and of one piece with the same, and which shall screw toward the adjacent end of the barrel, when the water is allowed to run, in order that an application may be made at the outside of the barrel to prevent escape of water through the end of the barrel under excessive pressure, which application may be a packing of any suitable material, such as cloth or leather, and which shall be fully efiective in preventing the escape of water through the end of the barrel under the greatest pressure.
' In order that others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, 1 will proceed to describe the same in detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
A represents the barrel, and D the neck of the faucet, these two parts being formed with and connected together by means of the screwthreads at a. m. G is the eductiontube, which communicates with the chamber B of barrel A.
.E is the valve-rod, which is formed in one piece with the external head, G, and handle f f. The valve-rod E is formed with an enlarged screw-threaded portion, g, which is fitted to the threaded interior of the barrel A, and the valverod E is thereby adapted to be moved inward or outward by the turning of the handle f f, so as to place the valve E against or away from the inner end of the barrel A,
and thus open or close the induction-orifice 0. The valve E may be provided with a suitable packing, e, and held in position upon the threaded end of the valve-rod by means of the not (I and interposed jam-nut F.
n represents a packing of leather, cloth, or any other suitable material, applied to the inner face of the head G, and consequently outside of the barrel A. NVhen the valverod is rotated so as to open the valve and allow the water to run, the handle f f and head G are thereby drawn against or toward the body of the faucet, and the packing a is jammed or compressed tightly between said head G and the adjacent end ot'the barrel A. Hence, when the valve is open, even if the internal pressure of water be of the most excessive character, the packing a will etfectually pretent any water from escaping at that end of the barrel.
By forming the valve-rod E, head G, and handle ff in one solid piece, I attain a degree of efficiency and strength which cannot be attained when the handle and its head G are formed separately, for in the latter case the necessary joint which is made in connecting the handle to the valve-rod, affords a means of egress for the water, the escape of which could not then be invariably prevented by the packing a, and the handle thus attached is liable to become loosened.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the faucet herein described, consisting of the barrel A, provided with a valve-seat, a, and an eductionnozzle, 0, the neck D, connected to the bar rel by a screw-joint, a m, to afl'ord access to the valve-seat, the stem E, cast in one piece with the external head, G, and threaded at g, to fit an internal screwthread in the barrel A, and the valve E, mounted removably on the end of the stem E, all as herein specified and for the purpose explained.
THOWAS- M. (JOFFIN.
