IMPROVEMENT IN racer-TS tite rtthnlr narra in in these ttters atent mit nmltiitg gaat nf tte istat.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
- Be it known'that LDAVID'P. SMITH, ofv Salem, in the county of Salem, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a. v ertical longitudinal section of nn applied molasses-faucet having my said improvement attached thereto, and 4 f Figure 2.a transverse section of the same, on the dotted line o 1c of iig. 1,the said drawings forming a part of this specification, and likcletters of reference indicating the saine parts when inboth figures.
My improvement relates to those faucets which are ,intended to be screwed tightly into the sides or'ends of such wooden vessels as molasses-hogsheads, oil-barrels, Ste., and has a twofold object, e., the prevention of' any leaking around between the inserted end of the faucet and the 'wood of the vessel, and 'the rendering the faucet at all tires perfectly firn and secure in itsposition. I l
My invention consists in the construction and application to a faucet of a screw-cut washer or jam-nut, having a broad face, in combination with an elastic packing, and a straight, cylindrical, screw-cut portion 0f the barrel of the faucet, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.
- Referring to the drawings, A is the barrel of the faucet; B, the screw-cut washer or jam-n11f thel'fl; C, the elastic packing; land D, a section of the end of a-molsses-hogshead, to whichthe improved faucet'is applied.
The end of the barrel A, which is screwed into the wood D, is tapered from' a to a, as usual, while the portion which entends from a to rtw is made cylindrical, and the screw-threads continued regularly throughout' kits lengtlutsee iig. 1.,) f
The washer ory jamnut B is a hollow cylinder, of about halt` the' length which Iis between a and a ofthe barrel A, and is screw-cut around its whole interior, so that it will t accurately around, and traverse backward and forward the part of the barrel A which is between a and a, when the said washeror jam-nutB is rotated thereon for the purpose. o i' v l The inner 'end or face of the said washer orfjamnut-B is made in tho form of a broad, dat ilange,b, with v a slightly-raisedboundary-edge, b, around its face, whilst its outer side is provided with four studs, b 6" 6 6', whichIserve as ready means whereby it can be conveniently rotated on,the barrel A.
The elastic packing C is a, flat ring ofvulcanized gum, or other elastic packinglmaterial,.which lits accurately and closely around the screw-cut cylindrical portion of A, and also against the raised edge, of B, and is, in thickness, about twice the height of the said raised edge-on the face of B.' y
In applying this faucet, after a suitable hole has been bored inthe wooden vessel for the purpose, the tapered end is to be screwed into the holen short distance. The washer'or jam-nut B, with the packing-ring C attached, is then rotated up into flat contact with the face or surface of the vessel, and then the screwing in of Y the faucet continued until it has entered the length of the tapered portion a d, or until `the screw-'threads thereonliave sufficient hold in thearocd, when the said washer or jam-nut B is then to be screwed up firmly against the vessel, as represented in (ig. 1. i L
It will bc seen that, in thus applying the faucet to a wooden vessel, the washer orjam-nut- Bf-will cause its tapered end to enter the hole in the wood' pcrpcndicularly, and that, when the samey is afterward screwed up tightly and firmly against tlievsaid vessel, it will not only prevent any leaking around between the faucet and the wood, but will continue to hold the faucet firmly and securely in position. l i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to sccurebylletters Patent, is
The washer or 'jam-nut' B, in' combination withthe elastic packing C andthe screw'-cnteylindrical portion a' a" ofthe b arrcl A, thc said parts being-.constructed and arrangedto operate .together-, when applied to the woodenwessel, ,substantially as and for ,the-purpose described. l
