Description

@uitrit faire gamut-'frn WILLI-AM GLEASON,` OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 70,830, dated NovemberlZ, 1867. i i
IMPROVBD, Toon-nner.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GLEASON, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Rest vfor -the ToollHolder ot' Engine-Lathes, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, lmaking part of this specication, in which the figure is a vertical central-section of my invention.
This invention relates to that class of engine-lathes in which it is impracticable to use Aa weighted tool-rest; and its nature consists in providing a rest for the tool-holder of such lathes, which will permit the tool to be raised or lowered, as may be desired, and without loosening it in the holder, v
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I make the sliding bed 'A in the ordinary way, except the addition of a vertical hole in the centre, for .the
reception of the clamping-swivel V. There is a hole drilled in one side, large enough to receive the eccentric portion C of-the clamping-shaft Y, the outer end of which is squared to take the wrench W, the hole being made with a smaller dr i1l beyond the swivel, for. the journal-bearing for the inner end of the clamping-shaft. The outer bearingis formed by 'the blushing b, which is secured in placeby the set-screw a. There is a round seaton the upper face of the sliding hed A, to receive the annular rotary gauge G, which is firmly secured to,
the bed by the annular plate P, and a series of clamping-screws, S. The gaugeGr is provided inside with one or more turns of a coarse screw-thread or inclined plane, e. Above this thread is a rim, r, made to tit loosely in the groove d of the rest D when it is lowered, and by this means the dustaud dirt are preventedfrom enter-V ing the working joints. The rest is threaded to t the thread in the gaugering G. The centre of the rest Dis bored out and threaded, as shown, to fit the thread .I on theuppcr end ofthe clamping-screw S. Both of these threads, e and J, are right-hand threads, but the lower end ot' the clamping-screw is provided with a left-hand thread, f, corresponding with that 'in the top of the clamping-swivel or nut V. `The lead of the threads J and f should equal that ofthe thread e. The necessity of this', it will be seen, is owing Ato the fact that the clamping-screw S is made to turn with the gauge-ring G by means of-,the lever-pin E, which lits snugly in the ring at g, and through the stem of the screw S, wheile it is allowed alittle vertical play. When the ring G and screw S are lgiven a full turn in the direction to raise the tool-rest D, thc screw will be raised as much as the lead of the threadsf, consequently that elevation must be compensated for by a corresponding diminution in the' lead of the threads J. The parallelism of the rest D withl the sliding bod A is maintained by means of thc bolt F, which is screwed firmly into the rest, and is nicely litted into the bed A, as shown. The gauge-ring G can only he turned one revolution less the diameter oi' the bolt E. The ring may he turned by inserting the end h of the wrench W into one of the holes c, there being several provided in the ring. When thedesired elevation or depression of the tool or cutter is obtained, tho parts are iirmly bound together by turningthe cam or eccentric C down. '.lhc plug-screw n closes lthe oil-hole for the inside screw, SLC. '.lhcsc tool-rests are attached to the lathes in the ordinary manner, and `may be easily applied to those already in usc. -Any slack or looseness that might occur from wear between the parts, may bc compensated for by removing the pin E and giving a half turn or more to the screw S. Instead of' the screwf, that end of the screw S may be swivelled Yto the clamping-nut Vhy a halved screw-collar. The eccentric clamp C may he dispensed with by substituting a taper pin or key to bind or clamp the parts firmly together when the desired set of the cutting-tool is obtained.
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l.. The employment of thc triple-screw system, substantially as herein set for'th, for the purpose of adjusting vertically the cutting-tool of engine-lathes without loosening it. f
' 2. The arrangement of the eccentric clamping-shaft Y,-in connection with the clamping-Screw S and rest D, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM GLEASON.
