Description

tnitrd 51mg handle.
GEORGE W. HERRING,
Letters Patent N o. 97,398, dated November 0F BANGOR, MAINE.
30, 1869; aatedated .November 27, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Hacerse, of Banger, in the county of Penobscot, and in the State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auger-Handles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of an anger-handie, by which the shank of the auger is held firmly in its place, and can readily be removed and inserted, at pleasure.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and which represent a longitudinal vertical section of my improved auger- A represents the wooden handle, which has a hole through its centre, for the insertion ofthe shank B of the anger.
Around the centre of the handle A is placed a metal collar, C, having a hole corresponding with the hole through the wooden handle.
One half ot' this collar is not as thick as the other lialf, the line of division being through the centre oi' the hole above mentioned.
The thinner end of the collar is 'provided with screwthreads, on which is 'placed a nut, D; and between said nut and the larger portion of the collar C is placed a ring or washer, E, of such thickness as to make the outer surface smooth and even.
'.lhe washer E is provided with notches, in size a littleless than one-half of the hole in the collar O.
When it is desired to insert the anger-shank B in the handle, the nut D is loosened, when the washer E .is moved slightly outward. lhe shank is then insorted, and the nut tightened, when the notches in the washer, closing against the shank, hold it firmly.
In the outer edge ot' the' washer E are two slots or notches, a a, through which are inserted pins e e into the collar, so that the. washer can only be withdrawn a certain distance, and, consequently, cannot come olf, and be lost.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The arrangement, on the handle A, of the collar C, slotted washer or ring E, pins b b, and'nut D, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes. herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 24th day of March, 1869.
