Be it known that I, F. P. PLEGHAR, of New Haven, in the county o f New Haven, and State of Connecticut,have invented a new Improvement in Bit-Stock; and I do hereby declare the following, when 'taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the"sameand which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in the manner of securing the bit into the stock, and consists in the arrangement of a sa'ddlemver the socket of the stock, and combined with a nut, so that the nut will draw the saddle hard down upon the shank o fthe bit, forcing and holding it firmly into the socket.

To enable others to construct my improvement', I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A is the socket, formed to receivethe bit in the usual manner. Its outer surface is threaded, to receive a nut, B, the said nut turning freely up and down on the`said threaded surface. Gis a saddle crossing overtbe socket, as seen in iig. 2, so -asto partially surround the shank of the bit, and extending down each side of the socket, within the nut, and so as to be moved up and down with the nut, and also to be turned from the position in iig. 1 to that in fig. 2. When in the position ,in fig. 2, the bit B is inserted into the socket in the usual manner; then the said saddle is turned forward to the position seen in g. 1,- arond the shank; Athen the nut is turned, drawing with it the saddle, untilthe saddle strikes upon the enlarged portion of the shank,"and is borne down with suiicient force to drive the shank and hold it firmly in the socket. To remove the bit, raise the saddle by unscrewing the nut until the saddle can be turned away, as in iig. 2. Thus is formed a. simple and ready adjustment, and very cheap in its construction.

I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming the securing of the hit into the brace by means of an open h ead or nut partially surrounding the bit, as s'uc'h,` I am awar-e,'is not new.
