Description

@uiten tates latent @frn O. IzI TAYLOR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM E. PAR- RISH, OF NEW YORK OITY.
Letters Patent No. 82,044, dated Sepember, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-STOCKS.
@te rtrttlt nimh tu in tigen Entert rtenf mit making gint tf the tame.
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY ooNcnnN:
Be it known that I, O. H. TAYLOR, of the city of Brooklyn,l county of Kings, and State of .New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Securing Bits and other Tools in Bit-Stocks, (for boring-bits g) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists iu providing a bit-stock with a transversely tf-shaped opening to receive the bit, said opening being wider at'the side next the thumb-screw than at its opposite side, and being transversely V-shaped with the longitudinal line of the bit when in position; also, providing asubstantial boss for the thumb-screw to pass through, to prevent the threads of the screws from stripping.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable-adjustable bit-holder or stock.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, in the accompanying drawings, represents a top view of the' portion of 'a bit-stock, that holds the bit.
Figure 2 represents a side elevation of the same, showing a portion of the handle D.
Letters of like nature and kind refer to like parts in both the gures. p
I construct my bit-stock in any of the known forms except that portion that receives and holdsA the bit shown at A A, which saidportion A A has formed throughits centre an opening or hole unlike other bit-stocks, it, the said hole, being made narrower ati the back, asshown at the termination oi' the red line P at J, fig. 1, than it is at the side next to the boss B, so that when the bit G (as shown) is inserted into the opening, the thumb-screw O being turned back sothat the bit may be kept close to the side next to the boss, it will be observed that the bit having a transversely-square shank, it cannot go into the socket far enough to touch the back at J, the termination of the red line P, (providing the shoulder of the bit is large enough to prevent it from going entirely through the socket,) consequently there will be an open space for the bit to be forced into by the screw. Said space being transversely wedge-form, causes the bit to be heldin avery firm manner, when the screw is properly set against it, without fitting, it readily adjusting itself by the pressure of the screw to the V-form of the opening.
I usually make the opening in my bit-stock forthe bit, with three sides at right angles, as shown in iig. 1, and the other bevelling, so as to converge toward the centre of the opening J at the back, and opposite the boss B, the object being to give the hit a solid bearing against two of its relative diagonal corners when in use.
V I also combine a projection or boss, Bfwith my bit-stock, for the screw C to pass through, of suiicient thickness to give the necessary amount of metal to keep the screw-thread from stripping, as they generally do 'in ordinary thumb-screw bit-stocks after alittle use.
It will be observed that the opening for the bit in my bit-stock i's longer (transversely) the way the red lines run than it is across them, and may be carried to any practical extent on the same principle, so that the largest and smallest bitlshank may be firmly held in the same socket without adjustment.V
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to securel by Letters Patent, is
The socket A, contracted at one side, and adapted for the reception of a. shank of a tool which may be secured in the stock by a screw, or its equivalent, so applied as to force the shank into the contracted portion of the socket, substantially as described.
O. H. TAYLOR.
