JOHN WILCOX, or THCMPSCNVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 63,126, dated M'arch` 19,1867.' v

' @its tlgthul numb it iu'tlgttt @hitters gntnrt inwerking butt nf its stmt.'
To ALL WnoM IT MAY CoNCnRN; I
Be ituknown that I, JOHN WIIGOX, of Thompsonville, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut,
have .invented a new and improved Screw Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which-willenable others skilled inthe art to make'and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. l
4My invention consists inthe construction and manner of securing tllevalve toits seat so as to operate 1t by a screw, whereby it is adapted to various purposes and overcome diiiicul'ties which have hitherto .been-experienced'in opening and closing apertures'for the admission or discharge of air, gas, steam, or liquids, as will be hereinafter described. i
Figure 1 represents a verticalseotion of the valve and seat through 'the line l:e @of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a horizontal' section of fig. 1through the line y y.
- Similarletters of reference indicate -likeparts v Afis the valve portion withthe screw attached, 'and is'tlie seat. It is -a sectiono` a tube having an interior screwfthread and with exterior shallow grooves for the purpose of more conveniently attaching it to an elastic tube when desired. 'j This interior screw-thread is double in its upper portion vor in that portion irl-which the threadon thevalve. works In order to-mako a stop for the valve after it is opened, as representediu ig. one ofthe threads in the soat'isout out up tov a point, a, and-a stop-piece, 11,'is attached to the valve lportion, which (as the valve is unscrewed) comesin eontactwith the p'oin'tla, thus preventing the' valve from boing raised entirely out, and as seen in the drawin`g.- The-screw lupon thovalve tsin to the remaining doublethread left in 'the seat portion. The valve isl.i`orm`ed lby-atta'chng ashort section of a tube, c, to the valve piece proper.
by legs or studs el, thus leaving intervals or spaces between them for the admission or discharge ol' air liquids, Sto., and attaching their other ends to the cap-piece oliy the valve. These studs are plainly shown in iig. 2. lhe
valve is made tight init-s seat, either-by making a ground vmetallic joint, or as seen in the;drawing,-by' pressing the'ilange e (which is seen onthe 'under side) on to someelastic packing ezt/,which lies in a recess inthe seat.
For this recess and `device for keeping a'valve tight in its seat, I have an application fora patent now pending. The valve is,v turned in and outin any' convenient manner'. In thevone represented Vthe outer edge of the valve-cap is milled for thatplirpose'.- This'valvo i's particularly adapted tov the elastic life-preserver, where the common pressure of the atmosphere is 'found to beall thatis necessary, but for'water basins and pipes, bottoms of boats, tanks, bathing tubs, and variousI otherfpurposes, it will be found to be avery valuable improvement.
Having thus described my invention, 'what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'g A valve constructed, arranged, and operatingsubstantially as herein shown and described. 'Y I claim the stop, arrangement a b substantially as herein setforth, in combination lwith a Screw-valve. a l The above speci'cation of my invention signed by mc this 21st day o'f November, 1866. JOHN WILQOX.
