Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT FULLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEAM-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,332, dated .August 31, 1858.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FULLER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Cock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a longitudinal central section of my invent-ion.
This invention consists in having a plug of rubber or other suitable elastic material placed on the valve stem and tted between a metallic shield on one side and a metallic cap on the other, the cap having a nut bearing against it, and the parts arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby due provision is made to compensate for the wearing of the plug, and the casualty of the forcing of the plug through the valve seat by the pressure of the steam effectually guarded against.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invent-ion I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the tube of the cock which may be formed of two parts a, connected by screw threads a', the end of part a, forming a valve seat ax, and being of annular concave form.
B, is a tube which joins tube A, at right angles and has an arbor C, fitted within it, said arbor being retained in proper position by a shoulder c, and cap (Z, the latter being screwed on the end of tube B, as shown clearly in the drawing.
The lower end of the arbor C, has an arm e, projecting eccentrically from it, and this arm lits into the eye f, of a valve stem I), On this stem D, a plug E, is placed, said plug being of rubber or other suitable elastic material and of such size that when not subjected to pressure, it will be somewhat larger in diameter than the internal diameter of the part a. v
The plug E, is placed between a metallic shield g, and a cap laf-the shield g, is of suflcient diameter to fit snugly the inner portion of the seat ax, if the shield is forced against it. The face of the shield g, is concave to form a sort of socket to receive the plug and the cap z., is a metal shell which fits over the greater portion of the steam side of the plug E. The outer end of the stem I), has a screw thread formed on it to receive a nut F.
The interior of the part b, is larger in diameter than the part a, as shown clearly in t-he drawing so as to allow the plug E, to be of a diameter greater than a, and receive the plug E, and the upper end of the arbor C, is provided with a handle G.
From the above description it will be seen that by turning the arbor C, the plug E, will be drawn snugly to and moved from its seat ax, and it will also be seen that the shield g, in bearing against the inner part of the seat ax, will prevent the plug from being forced through the seat ax. The shield also prevents the abrasion of the plug, and by screwing up the nut E, the plug will be expanded so that all wear may be readily compensated for.
I am aware that elastic plugs or valves have been previously used for steam cocks and that nuts have been arranged or applied to them for the purpose of expanding them, but, I am not aware that any have been arranged like the one herein described with a shield and cap for the purpose of not only expanding the plug when necessary, but also preventing abrasion and the plug from being forced through the valve seat by the pressure of the steam. I therefore do not claim broadly' the elastic plug E, but,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
Placing the elastic plug E, on the valve` stem D, between the metallic shield g, and cap 7L, the parts being arranged relatively with the valve seat ax, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALBERT FULLER.
