Abstract

677,144. Making brake drums. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Sept. 7, 1949 [Oct. 18, 1948], No. 23160/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Building - up by spraying. - A brake drum 1, of a good heat conducting light metal or alloy, such as aluminium, is provided with a wearing band 20 of two metals of substantially different hardness, such as zinc and stainless steel, by simultaneous metallization by spraying devices 10 and 11, such as a Schoop gun, while the drum is rotated slowly. The spray guns may be arranged, as in Fig. 2, so as to project on to two different zones of the drum, or they may project on to the same zone. The drum may be heated externally by a burner 12 to obtain better adhesion. The band 20, of preferable composition, zinc 20 to 65 per cent and stainless steel 80 to 35 per cent by weight, must be machined cylindrical from a maximum thickness of about 1 mm., as shown in Fig. 4, to a thickness of about 0.5 to 0.6 mm. In a modified construction, after sand-blasting, a layer of aluminium is applied before the layer of zinc and stainless steel.
