Abstract

706,956. Making gun-barrels. SULLIVAN, G. C. Feb. 25, 1952 [March 15, 1951], No. 4870/52. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXI] The barrel 10 of a firearm is made of a non- ferrous metal alloy, its bore being plated or coated with a harder material than that of the barrel. As an example, the alloy may contain 85 per cent to 90 per cent aluminium, 1 per cent to 5 per cent magnesium, 3 per cent to 8 per cent zinc, the balance being principally copper, chromium and impurities. The bore may be chromium plated, or a hard coating of amorphous alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) may be formed thereon by an electrochemical process. The chamber 16 and threaded rear end of the barrel may be masked whilst the barrel bore is being heated. The barrel shown is strengthened near the chamber by a sleeve 18; in a modification the chamber is fitted with a liner. The sleeve or the liner may be made of stainless steel. As shown in Fig. 6, the muzzle 17 of the gun is constructed with a recoil-absorbing device comprising a blast chamber 21 having parts 25, the chamber being formed either by undercutting or, as shown, by the provision of a plug 23 in an enlarged muzzle bore.
