Abstract

753,830. Ammunition cartridges. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES METAUX. Nov. 23. 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953], No. 33983/54. Class 9(1) An ammunition cartridge case is provided having a base and a tubular body formed by rolling one or more sheet metal blanks 1, the blank being a parallelogram of which the sides 2, 3 have such length that when the blank is rolled into the required tube, the blank describes a whole number of turns bringing the opposed sides 4, 5 into juxtaposition. The edges 6, 7 of the sides 4, 5 are bevelled so that the completed tube, Fig. 5. is of uniform thickness. In Fig. 6, the blank forming the inner part of the tube has unbevelled edges which abut at 10, the outer part of the tube being formed from a blank .with bevelled edges overlapping to form a seam 11. The two seams 10, 11 are preferably diametrically opposed. Spotwelding may be used to join the edges, or alternatively a synthetic resin may be used to glue the seams. The lower end of the completed tube is swaged to fit within the dished portion of a metal base 16, Fig. 8, having a central projection 19 threaded to receive a clamping member 21 which may be of a softer more flexible metal than the base 16. Instead of a screw thread, the projection 19 may have a reduced neck portion to hold the member 21 in position. A plastic material or soft metal may be placed between the base 16 and the tube 18 or between the tube and the member 21 to'improve the gas-tightness. These contacting surfaces may be coated with an adhesive such as a polymerized resin. To improve the clamping of the member 21, the base 16 may have an internal shoulder 20, the member 21 being forced down on this shoulder by means of an annular tool 24, Fig. 11. The blanks 1 used for the tubes may be sheet steel with a zinc coating and the bevels may be made by compression of the sheet edges.
