Abstract
584,368. Making torpedoes. VICKERSAMSTRONGS, Ltd., and JONES, L. Nov. 25, 1942, No. 16744. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Welding.-A torpedo hull is made from a number of metal stampings or pressings of circular cross-section each having an integral internal stiffening flange, the stampings being assembled in overlapping end-to-end relationship and secured together by welding. The stampings, which may be cylindrical or conical are each first formed with an outward peripheral flange 2 at one end and slightly reduced diameter 3 at the other or closed end 4. Each section then has its flange 2 machined off, the part 3 machined to correct diameter to mate with an adjacent section and the end 4 trepanned out to a diameter leaving an internal stiffening flange 6. The sections are then assembled on a jig 7 with their ends in overlapping relationship and are joined together by a number of widely spaced spot welds. On removal from the jig the joints are seam welded and the depressions 8 and seam between the sections provided with synthetic rubber or other plastic or hard filling substance.
