Abstract
557,243. Coating surfaces. NEWTON, CHAMBERS & CO., Ltd., and TUCKER, R. C. May 9, 1942, No. 6295. [Class 95] In a process of coating articles by means of a number of superimposed layers of a phenol formaldehyde resin or lacquer, the primer coating contains a vinyl acetate resin as well as a phenol formaldehyde resin. The amount of vinyl acetate resin in the primer coating is usually between 0.1 and 1.0 per cent. by weight, and the primer may also contain zinc chromate, litharge, red oxide of iron, or chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ), or a mixture of two or more of these substances. According to an example, a cleaned metal article is primed with a phenol -formaldehyde lacquer containing 6 per cent. by weight of zinc chromate and 0.5 per cent. by weight of a vinyl acetate resin, e.g. "Gelva" (Registered Trade Mark), and air dried. Two coats of a clear phenol formaldehyde lacquer are then applied, and the article heated to about 142‹C over 5 hours. A fourth coat of the phenol formaldehyde lacquer, containing 20 per cent. colloidal clay and half per cent "Gelva," is then applied and air dried. Two further coats of clear phenol formaldehyde lacquer are then applied and air dried, and the whole is then cured by heating at 142‹C.
