Abstract
Lacquers for preventing corrosion of metal surfaces contain one or more macromolecular ether compounds of the type obtained by reacting a polyhydric phenol, e.g. bisphenol, with epichlorhydrin in alkaline medium and one or more pigments containing a chromate group and a molybdate group. They are especially useful for protecting the surfaces of containers for synthetic detergents, particularly those containing-SO3Na or-OSO3Na groups. In the example a lacquer containing two varieties of "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark), Scarlet Chrome and diacetone alcohol, toluene and ethyl acetate as solvents, is applied to an iron barrel and baked for 15 minutes at 232 DEG C. More than one layer may be applied. Other lacquer layers, preferably with a basis of macromolecular ether compound, may be applied over the protective lacquer layer. Where more than one pigment is used, the chromate group may be in one and the molybdate group in the other.
