Abstract

Paints for use as primers on corroded iron surfaces comprise iron powder suspended in a vehicle, e.g. an epoxy resin or plasticised polystyrene. The iron powder, containing no chromium, forms at least 75% of the total pigment, and at least 75% of the paint film when dried and set. The paints may also contain aluminium-alloy pigment, small amounts (up to 0.5%) of zinc, and up to 5% of magnesium oxide. A concentrate of iron powder in an epoxy resin solution may be made and kept until required, a curing agent and thinners being added before use. The paints may act as primers for further coats of zinc or aluminium-zinc alloy paints; plasticised polystyrene may be used as the vehicle where the top coat is an epoxy resin aluminium alloy type paint.ALSO:Paints for use as primers on rusted or corroded iron surfaces comprise iron powder suspended in a vehicle which may be an epoxy resin or plasticised polystyrene. The iron powder, containing no chromium, forms at least 75% of the total pigment, and at least 75% of the paint film when dried and set. The paints may also contain aluminium-alloy pigment, small amounts (up to 0.5%) of zinc, and up to 5% of magnesium oxide.
