Abstract

A decorative-surface-coating composition comprises heat-expandable resin beads, a binder for adhering the beads to the surface, and a solvent for the binder. The beads, which suitably contain a blowing agent, e.g. cyanamide, sodium bicarbonate, diazoaminobenzene &c. may be polystyrene or other polymerizable organic compound, e.g. alpha-alkyl or ring-substituted styrenes, acrylic esters, alpha beta ethylenically unsaturated dibasic acids and their derivatives, or diolefins, and may be polymerized separately or copolymerized with styrene. Specified binders are resins such as phenol-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde &c. or alternatively alkali metal silicates; lower alcohols, e.g. methanol, serve as solvents for resins and water for silicates. The composition, which may contain pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, iron oxide, silica &c. and may be admixed with paint or varnish, is applied as a film which is baked at 210 DEG F. to 300 DEG F.ALSO:A decorative surface-coating composition comprises heat-expandable resin beads, a binder for adhering the beads to the surface, and a solvent for the binder.
