Abstract

1375178 Coating/polymerising with high energy radiation O'BRIEN CORP 7 Oct 1971 28468/74 Divided out of 1375177 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A method of coating a substrate at ambient temperatures comprises applying a film of a liquid coating composition to said substrate, said composition comprising an ethylenically unsaturated polymerisable monomer solvent and a prepolymer which is the reaction product of an acrylate functional intermediate and an epoxide containing compound, said intermediate being the reaction product of an organic acid anhydride comprising endic anhydride (2,2,1-bicyclo-5- heptene-2,3- dicarboxylic anhydride) and/or a chlorinated derivative of endic anhydride and/or an alkylated derivative of endic anahydride and a hydroxy acrylate of the formula wherein R is H or methyl and Z is an optionally substituted alkylene radical containing up to 12 carbon atoms; and curing the film by subjecting it to the influence of high energy ionising radiation, preferably electron beam radiation. If desired, the radiation curing may be followed by a thermal curing step. Suitable polymerisable solvents include vinyl esters of synthetic tertiary carboxylic acids, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, cyclohexyl acrylate, hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, ethylene glycol butyl ether monoacrylate, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl toluene, hexachlorobutadiene, styrene, ethyl vinyl benzene, isopropyl styrene, α-methyl styrene, acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, and polyol polyacrylates and methacrylates. The compositions may also include additives such as pigments, dyes, fillers and abrasives, such as CaCO 3 , MgO, BaSO 4 , Al 2 O 3 , powdered slate, asbestos or silicon carbide, or wallnut shell flour. In Examples the prepolymer is prepared by reacting together chlorendic anhydride and 2- hydroxyethyl acrylate in the presence of a polymerisation inhibitor, and then reacting the product with an epoxy novolac resin. Exemplified substrates include ceiling tiles, ABS panels and beverage containers.
