Abstract

1376067 Anti-corrosion coatings DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 18 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971 (2)] 38688/72 Heading C4A An aqueous coating composition comprises: (a) up to 100 grams per litre of hexavalent chromium, expressed as CrO 3 , and of which at least 80 wt. per cent is chromic acid, (b) up to 500 grams per litre of liquid of pulverent, e.g. flake, metal selected from Zn, Al and mixtures and alloys thereof, the weight ratio of chromium, expressed as CrO 3 , to pulverent metal being from 1 : 1 to 1 : 15; (c) 5-50 volume per cent based on the liquid of the composition of a liquid organic compound of C, H and O which boils at above 100‹ C. and which has hydroxyl, oxo and/or C 1 -C 6 ether groups; and (d) not less than 0À0005 volume per cent of a surface active agent. Up to 20% of the chromium can be provided by chromate or dichromate salts. The component (c) can be dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol or the monomethyl, dimethyl or ethyl ether of one of these, diacetone alcohol or diethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether. The surface active agent can be an alkylphenoxypolyethoxyalkanol having from 7 to 50 oxyethylene units per molecule. The composition can be applied to ferrous and non-ferrous substrates, e.g. by dipping, and is then dried in air and cured, e.g. at 400-1000‹ F. A topcoat of paint can be applied to the coated substrate by electrocoating. The coated substrates can be welded.
