Abstract
A coating is formed on an article, e.g. a mild steel panel or steel or cast-iron articles, by anodic deposition from an aqueous bath of a water-thinnable paint containing a water-soluble synthetic resin and an organic liquid having a water-solubility at 20 DEG C. of not more than 5% by weight. The paint may contain from 1 to 12% by weight of the organic liquid. The resin employed may be a water-soluble phenolic urea, melamine or alkyd resin or a mixture and may contain one or more pigments such as carbon black, iron oxide, barytes, strontium chromate, rutile, or a blue dye, while the organic liquid may be a hydrocarbon solvent such as naphtha, xylene, white spirit, turps, esters such as butyl or amyl acetate, ketones such as cyclohexanone, or C7 and higher aliphatic alcohols. The coatings after rinsing with water may be stoved e.g. for 1/2 hour at 350 DEG F.ALSO:Water-thinnable resin-based paint compositions comprise aqueous dispersions of (1) a mixture of water-soluble phenolic and alkyd resins, carbon black, iron oxide, barytes, strontium chromate, monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol, and one of rectified naphtha, white spirit, n-butyl acetate and the acetate of the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol; (2) a mixture of water-soluble melamine and alkyd resins, rutile, "Monastral" (Registered Trade Mark) Blue LBX, monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol, and xylol; or (3) a water-soluble phenolic resin and a mixture soluble in water to less than 0.1% of normal primary and a -methyl primary aliphatic alcohols with some saturated cyclic alcohols.
