Abstract

1,164,153. Electro-phoretic painting. FORD MOTOR CO. Aug.18, 1966, No. 37131 /66. Heading C7B. An electro-coating process comprises immersing at least one electrically conductive object in an aqueous coating bath having dispersed therein an ionized film-forming resinous binder comprising at least a major proportion by wt. of a resin derived from a synthetic carboxylic acid or anhydride, and at least one particulate pigment (which remains infusible at the anode curing temperature used subsequently to electro-coat a paint film thereon) the binder to pigment ratio being at least 2:1 by wt., and passing direct current between the electrically conductive object(s) and a cathode immersed in the coating both which also contains a minor proportion of a particulate non-ionic filming adjunct resin which is a hard non- ionic resin which does not form a film on electrodeposition but is later fusible at the curing temperature and withdrawing the coated object(s) from the bath. In the example the electro-deposition was carried out in a metal tank as the cathode with the anode as a sheet of steel and the coating bath comprised an aq. mixture of a copolymer of butyl acrylate, styrene and methacrylic acid, which has been reacted with trihydroxylmethylaminomethane as the binder diisopropanolamine, a pigment consisting of T 2 O 2 and kaolin clay, and a powdered vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer as the adjunct resin. The pigment may be organic as well as inorganic. The electro-deposited film can be cured by itself or by applying a top-coat enamel. Reference is made to Specifications 972,169; 1, 030, 204 and 1,164,154.
