Abstract

In the process of electrophoretic coating as disclosed in the parent Specification using an apparently water-soluble and clear dispersion of a film-forming paint binder consisting of a polycarboxylic acid resin partly neutralised with a water-soluble amino-compound, the dispersion includes particles of the neutralised resin up to 500 millimicrons thick which may render the dispersion hazy. The pH of the dispersion is maintained either at 5 to 7 or at 8.2 to 8.4, by suitable replenishment additions of an aqueous concentrate of the amino-compound and polycarboxylic acid resin which together maintain the resin in "polyelectrolyte" condition i.e. the electro-phoretic deposit formed is directly proportional to the current applied and is independent of the voltage. During coating the excess of amino compound formed may be removed by electrodialysis, or by adding organic acids e.g. malic, citric, or acids having 12 to 44 C atoms which form soaps, which are co-deposited on the anode surface. This may be metal or other conductive surface in the form of wire, sheet, tube, perforated metal or articles. The dispersion contains resins, amines, solubilizing agents, viscosity reducers, pigments, and deoxygenating compounds, all as described in the parent Specification. A similar apparatus is also described.
