Abstract

1,233,102. Electro-deposition of an organic coating in two steps. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 27, 1968 [June 2, 1967], No.25186/68. Heading C7B. An electrically conductive workpiece has a continuous film of an organic coating material electro-deposited thereon in two steps (a) as it passes through an aqueous stream of the coating material, but while not immersed in a bath thereof, and thereafter (b) while immersed in an aqueous bath of the same or a different organic coating material, the deposition potential in step (b) between the work and an electrode contacting the bath being less than the deposition potential in step (a) between the work and an electrode contacting the stream. The coating material may consist solely of an organic resin but may also include pigment and/or filler material. The coating material may be a pigmented extended coupled glyceride drying oil composition as disclosed in Specification 1,213,804. and may be applied using 400 to 1000 volts in step (a) and 100 to 350 volts in step (b). The films may be cured by baking or, where a coating composition as disclosed is Specification 1, 213, 803 .is used, the films may be cured by radiation with an electron beam. As shown, an article 25 to be coated, connected as anode, passes horizontally between cathode assemblies 63, 61 through which an aqueous dispersion of the coating material is pumped on to the article. The outlets from the assemblies 63, 61 may comprise cathode grills. After this coating step, the article, while still connected as anode, is further coated by being lowered and moved horizontally through a coating bath 13 in a tank 11 connected as cathode. The article is suspended by, and electrically connected through, a hanger 29 having a plate 33 which contacts a bus bar 21. The article is moved by a chain conveyer 41 from which it is electrically insulated at 37. Specification 1,233,101 is referred to.
