Abstract

1,233,101. Electro-phoretic paint coating method. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 13, 1968 [June 2, 1967], No. 22523/68. Heading C7B. In electro-phoretically coating an electrically conductive workpiece with a paint dispersion comprising a synthetic polycarboxylic acid binder resin dispersed in water by an amine, (i) the workpiece is not immersed in the dispersion (ii) a plurality of streams of the dispersion is provided in contact with an electrode unit, (iii) the streams converge into a single stream, (iv) the workpiece is moved through the single stream and (v) a direct electric current is passed between the electrode unit and the workpiece via the stream until a continuous film of the paint is deposited on the workpiece. Fig. 1 shows flow of a paint dispersion. through a cathode assembly 39 and on to an electrically conductive workpiece sheet 25 connected as anode which passes over a roller 21. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a grill-work cathode (39-2) of the assembly 39. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate alternative cathodes (139, 239) pivotally mounted on universal joints (143, 243). The paint may consist solely of the binder or may also include pigment and/or filler material. The paint may be a pigmented extended coupled glyceride drying oil paint composition as disclosed in Specification 1, 213, 804 and may be applied using 400 to 1, 000 volts. After electrocoating, the films may be cured by baking or, where a coating composition as disclosed in Specification 1, 213, 803 is used, the films may be cured by radiation with an electron beam. Specification 12, 233, 102 is referred to.
