Abstract

Conductive articles, e.g. steel panels, are coated by electrodeposition while immersed in an aqueous film-forming coating composition containing an ionic cross-linkable organic filmforming material soluble in the aqueous phase of the composition, the article then being removed from the composition and cross-linking effected. Typically the composition contains by weight 5 to 10% of non-volatile material, up to 10% of a polar water-miscible organic liquid and may contain pigment in a volume concentration (P.V.C.) up to 30% of the ionic cross-linkable material. If the P.V.C. is reduced to 10% or less pitting of the coating is avoided. The composition may contain a resin with free acid groups and be solubilized by ammonia or an amine to give an alkaline solution for anodic coating e.g. with a varnish linseed oil - maleic anhydride resin, an acrylate resin, an alkyd resin from propylene glycol, trimellitic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and coconut oil fatty acid; or a resin with free amine groups neutralized with an acid to give an acid solution for cathodic coating, e.g. with a polyamide resin. The compositions may include cross-linking agents and are used at a pH of 0.3 to 1.0 unit on the stable side of their instability point. After drying, the coated articles are stoved, e.g. at 150 to 165 DEG C., to effect crosslinking.
