Abstract

The surface of aluminium or aluminium alloys is prepared for coating with non aqueous oleaginous and organic solvent type printing inks, adhesives, dewaxed shellac, nitrocellulose and vinyl lacquers and plastic films by treating with phytic acid preferably in the form of a solution containing 0,02%-10% by weight of phytic acid. The phytic acid is dissolved in an organic solvent such as ethyl alcohol or a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and is applied by rolling, brushing or spraying and then dried at 150 DEG F. to 450 DEG F. The required coating material is then applied to the treated surface and dried or alternatively the coating material may be applied in the solution of phytic acid.ALSO:The surface of aluminium or an aluminium based alloy which has residual rolling lubricant thereon is modified by the application of phytic acid, preferably in the form of a solution containing 0.02-10% by weight of phytic acid. The phytic acid is dissolved in an organic solvent such as ethyl alcohol or a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and ethylene glycol, monoethyl ether and the solution is applied by rolling, brushing or spraying, followed by drying at 150 DEG to 450 DEG F. The phytic acid may also be applied to the surface together with dewaxed shellac, nitrocellulose shellac, or printing ink.
