Abstract

A method of finishing wood surfaces comprises applying a composition containing an optical brightener dissolved in an organic solvent vehicle. The optical brighteners are hydroxy coumarin; 1-naphthylamine-4-sulphonic acid; sodium 2-naphthylamine-6,8-disulphonate; dibenzoylamino - stilbenesulphonic acid derivatives; naphthalene; 2-styryl - benzimidazole; 1 - (m - acetamido - 2-benzimidazole) - 2 - (p - acetamidophenyl) ethylene; triazine condensation products; 2,21 - ethylene bis - (1 - benzylbenzimidazole); o - alkoxy - benzoyle derivatives of 4,41-diamino - stilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid; b -methyl-umbelliferone; and 4-methyl-7-diethylamine coumarin. The organic solvent vehicle may comprise glycol, mono-methyl ether of ethylene glycol, mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol, mono-ethyl ether of diethylene glycol, methanol, alcohol, butyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, toluol, xylol, and naphtha. The optical brightener in the solvent may be applied direct to the wood; or the optical brightener may be applied in a solvent containing a wood dye, with or without pre-treatment of the wood with optical brightener in solvent. The optical brightener may also be included in a lacquer sealer and/or in a gloss lacquer. The composition contains 0.002 per cent to 1.0 per cent of the optical brightener.
