Abstract

Compositions for staining and waterproofing wood comprise a water-repellent aromatic monoazo dye substituted by one or two alkyl or aliphatic acyl radicals having from 8-12 carbon atoms, the linkage between the aromatic and aliphatic part of the azo dye being a -CO-or -CH2- group (see Group IV (c)) and a vehicle for the dye comprising an organic solvent having a boiling point above 100 DEG C. Specified vehicles include glycols, diethylene glycol mono-ethyl or -butyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, triethanolamine, butyl lactate, chlorinated diphenyls and ichthyol. Other solvents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene and toluene may be added to the compositions. The compositions may be incorporated with cellulose ester or ether solutions or lacquers and may also contain film-forming agents, fillers, drying oils, resins, pigments, plasticizers, fluorescent dyes, optical brighteners and ultra-violet light absorbers.ALSO:The invention comprises compositions containing water-repellent aromatic monoazo dyes substituted by one or two alkyl or aliphatic acyl radicals having from 8-12 carbon atoms, the linkage between the aliphatic and aromatic part of the azo dye comprising a -CO- or -CH2- group, and a vehicle for the dye comprising an organic solvent having a boiling point above 100 DEG C. Specified dyes include 2 : 4 : 6 - trihydroxyphenyl - 3 - nonyl ketoneazo - 21 - naphthalene or - azo - p - octylbenzene or azo-p-dodecylbenzene, 2 : 4 : 6-trihydroxyphenyl - 3 - undecyl ketone - azo - 21-naphthalene or -azo-p-octylbenzene or -azo-p-dodecylbenzene and p-octyl- or -dodecyl-phenylazo-2-naphthol. Specified vehicles include diethylene glycol mono-ethyl or -butyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, triethanolamine, glycerine, butyl lactate, chlorinated diphenyls, glycols and ichthyol. The compositions are used to stain and waterproof wood (see Groups III and VIII) and may also contain volatile solvents, film-forming agents, fillers, drying oils, resins, pigments, plasticizers, fluorescent dyes, ultra-violet light absorbers and optical brighteners.
