Abstract

Paint and varnish compositions are prepared by mixing a compound of formula <FORM:0885679/III/1> wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R1 is hydrogen or an aryl, aralkyl, alkyl or substituted alkyl radical continuing up to 18 carbon atoms; R11 is an alkyl, alkenyl or substituted alkyl radical containing from 10 to 18 carbon atoms; x is 0, 1, 2 or 3; and y is not greater than 4-x; or a compound of formula (RO)xZr(OCH2R111)4-x; wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R111 is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical having a hydroxyl radical attached to carbon, and x is 0, 1, 2 or 3, with a mixture of the components of paint or varnish compositions, comprising a pigment and a pigment vehicle. Specified pigments are TiO2 and a pyrazolone pigment. Conventional paint and varnish compositions may be used.ALSO:Paint, varnish and organic-base ink compositions, which may contain natural and synthetic resins, such as alkyd and phenolic resins and oleo-resins, are prepared by mixing a compound of formula <FORM:0885679/IV (a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R1 is hydrogen or an aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R11 is an alkyl, alkenyl or substituted alkyl radical containing from 10 to 18 carbon atoms; #c is 0, 1, 2 or 3; and g is not greater than 4-#c; or a compound of formula (RO)xZr(OCH2R111) 4-x, wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R111 is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical having a hydroxyl radical attached to carbon, and #c is 0, 1, 2 or 3, with a mixture of the components of paint, varnish or organic-base ink compositions, comprising a pigment and a pigment vehicle. Specified compositions are of TiO2, an alkyd resin, and an organic zirconium derivative and TiO2, a pyrazolone pigment, an alkyd resin, and an organic zirconium derivative.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula (RO)xZr(OCH2R111)4-x wherein R is an alkyl or hydroxy-substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms, R111 is a monohydroxy-substituted alkyl radical, and x is 0, 1, 2 or 3. In an example <FORM:0885679/IV (b)/1> is prepared by refluxing 2-ethylhexandiol-(1,3) with tetraisopropyl zirconate-isopropyl alcohol complex. The invention also comprises compounds of formula (RO)xZr(OC2H4N(R1)2) 4-x.(HO2CR11)y wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R1 is a hydrogen atom or an aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkyl or substituted alkyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms; R11 is an alkyl, alkenyl or substituted alkyl radical containing from 10 to 18 carbon atoms; x is 0, 1, 2 or 3; and y is not greater than 4-x. These compounds are formed by direct salt-formation.
