Abstract
A liquid organosilicon polymeric composition, for rendering masonry water-repellent, is made by (1) separating a mixture of the high boiling distillable by-products from the reaction of CH3Cl and Si to produce methylchlorosilanes, the components of the mixture having a boiling point above that of (CH3)2SiCl2, (2) alkoxylating the by-products with one or more primary or secondary lower alkyl monohydric alcohols in amount equivalent to at least 30 molar per cent. of the hydrolyzable chlorine in the mixture; and (3) partially hydrolyzing the alkoxylated product with water in amount such that the final product contains from 20 to 50 per cent. by weight of alkoxy groups. The preferred alcohols contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compositions may be dissolved in solvents such as benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexanone, kerosene, naphtha, stoddard solvent, mineral spirit, ethers, ethanol, butanol, acetone, carbontetrachloride, and butyl acetate. The resinous reaction products of silica-hydrogels with (CH3)3SiX, where X is chlorine or alkoxy, or [CH3)3Si]2O (see Specification 706,719) may be added in amounts up to 100 per cent. by weight of the hydrolyzate. The compositions may be used in conjunction with conventional organic materials used in treating masonry, e.g. aluminium stearate, paraffin and a drying oil, oleoresins in vegetable oil vehicles such as linseed oil. and emulsions of resins, usually with plasticizers, such as polyvinyl acetate and polystyrene. Examples are given. Specifications 575,667 and 609,507, [Group IV (b)], also are referred to.
