Abstract

Pliable waterproof coated fabrics are made by first impregnating and/or coating a cellulosic or regenerated cellulose fabric with an adhesive oil-modified alkyd resin, and then coating with a non-tacky varnish. The oil-modified alkyd resin, which is p made by heating together at 180-220 DEG C. in a current of inert gas such as nitrogen, a di- or tri-hydric alcohol such as glycerol, a dibasic organic acid or anhydride such as adipic acid or phthalic anhydride, and a saturated, unsaturated, or hydroxy long chain fatty acid or glyceride thereof, e.g. ricinoleic acid, castor or linseed oil, is applied as a solution or dispersion in acetone, xylene, or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, to which plasticisers, natural resins, drying oils, or varnishes may be added. In examples, glycerol, phthalic anhydride and ricinoleic acid are heated in a current of nitrogen at 200 DEG C. for 3 hours (almost to the point of gelation), and for 3 3/4 hours (when gelation has occurred). The cooled resin is dissolved or dispersed in a mixture of xylene and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. The non-tacky varnish may comprise a drying oil such as linseed oil or stand oil, a solution of natural or artificial resin, cellulose acetate or nitrate. Intermediate coatings may be applied, consisting of the varnish with an addition of an oil-modified alkyd resin or a plasticiser. The coated fabrics are suitable for waterproof and protective garments, curtains, and table coverings.
