Abstract

The components of bitumen pitches are separated into asphalt, resins and oils to provide initial materials for varnishes by treatment of the pitches with a selective solvent, (see Group V).ALSO:Pitches are pretreated whereby their components can be separated on treatment with a selective solvent in which asphalt is insoluble whilst resin and oil dissolve therein, the oil being subsequently separated from the resin in the resin oil solution. The pretreatment comprises the addition of an organic liquid or a mixture of such liquids, specified liquids being butyl alcohol, methyl or ethyl glycol, amyl acetate, benzene homologues, benzyl alcohol, turpentine oil, cyclohexanol, or a chlorohydrocarbon e.g. perchlorethylene or chlorobenzene, or the heated selective solvent e.g. acetone or its homologues. The extraction may be repeated. The pretreatment may also comprise grinding the pitch, either moist or dry, in the latter case, at a low temperature. Separation of the oil is effected by cooling e.g. to 5 DEG - 10 DEG C., or by precipitation on the addition of methyl, ethyl or propyl alcohol, low molecular weight esters e.g. methyl or ethyl acetate, formate or butyrate, or the methyl?glycol acetate, formate or butyrate.
