Abstract

Nitrocellulose powder is heated in a non-solvent organic liquid to a temperature below 150 DEG C., preferably between 60 DEG C. and 135 DEG C., in order to obtain a product giving solutions, which compared with those made from the original product, show a much lower viscosity and which are suitable as coating compositions; in addition to or alternatively to this, by a suitable choice of liquid, the diphenylamine present as stabilizer, and its conversion products, may be extracted, giving a light coloured product. Suitable non-solvent liquids are:-ethyl, propyl and butyl alcohols, toluene, benzene, and xylene, or a mixture of these; if, however, the extraction of the diphenylamine is desired, then of these liquids, ethyl alcohol is preferred. The treatment is preferably carried out at the boiling point of the selected liquid, although the use of an autoclave is permissible. The powder may be ground, preferably under alcohol, in order to facilitate the extraction of the diphenylamine.
