Abstract
Natural resins or their acids or derivatives thereof are treated with a volatile inorganic halide such as boron fluoride in the presence of an aldehyde such as paraformaldehyde or crotonic aldehyde in the presence or absence of an inert solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulphide, benzene, toluene, xylene, ligroin or tetrahydronaphthalene. The products of the treatment of natural resins still contain carboxylic acid groups and may be esterified by means of alcohols such as glycerine. In examples (1) a mixture of colophony, xylene and paraformaldehyde or (2) a solution of the glycerine ester of colophony in benzene and paraformaldehyde or crotonic aldehyde is treated with boron fluoride.
