Abstract

Polyester resins (I) having hydroxyl equivalents of 400 to 1,000 and acid values of 50 to 90 are the reaction products of polyester resins (II) having acid values greater than 10 but less than 40 and anhydrides of polycarboxylic acids. Resins (II) are derived from starting materials having a ratio of total carboxyl groups to total hydroxyl groups of 0.6 to 0.9. Resins (II) are prepared from polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides or chlorides and may be modified by fatty acids or oily glycerides. The resins (I) may be neutralized with NH3 or volatile organic amines which split off from the resin at temperatures below 200 DEG C. and dispersed in water, preferably in the presence of a water miscible organic solvent to give coating compositions. Such compositions desirably contain water-soluble phenoplasts or aminoplasts and may also contain pigments.ALSO:Surfaces, e.g. of metal or glass, are coated with aqueous stoving compositions comprising a salt of ammonia or an organic amine volatile from the composition at temperature below 200 DEG C. and a polyester resin (I) having a hydroxyl equivalent of 400 to 1,000 and an acid value of 50 to 90 which is the reaction product of a polyester resin (II) having an acid value greater than 10 but less than 40 and an anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid (see Division C3). The compositions may also comprise water-miscible organic solvents, aminoplasts, phenoplasts and pigments.
