Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of oil-modified alkyd resins are made by neutralizing an oil-modified alkyd resin whose polycarboxylic acid component includes isophthalic acid with an aqueous solution of a substance having an alkaline reaction, e.g. ammonia, morpholine, trimethylamine or triethanolamine. In addition to isophthalic acid, the polycarboxylic acid component may include orthophthalic, terephthalic, maleic or fumaric acid. The polyhydric alcohol component of the resin may be derived from glycerine, pentaerythritol or ethylene glycol (or mixtures thereof) and the oil component may be derived from the fatty acids of soya, fish linseed, coconut or tall oil, with or without benzoic acid. The water dispersibility may be improved by the addition of (a) a polar solvent such as butanol, cyclohexanol or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or (b) a solubilizer such as sorbitan monolaurate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate or an oil-modified maleic acid neutralized with ammonia. The dispersions are useful in the manufacture of air-drying or stoving varnishes and paints, if desired with the addition of a pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide) or a siccative (e.g. a mixture of Pb, Mn and Co naphthenates). They may also be used as non-drying plasticizers in aqueous phenol and urea resins. Specifications 733,230 and 785,180 are referred to.
