Abstract

1,164,154. Painting compositions. FORD MOTOR CO. 18 Aug., 1966, No. 23169/69. Divided out of 1,164,153. Heading C3P. A painting composition for use in electrodeposition of a coating film comprises a mixture of (a) water; (b) at least one pigment having an average particle size not exceeding 2 Á and which is infusible at the anode curing temperature used subsequently to electrocoat a paint film thereon; (c) a resin mixture comprising (1) a major fraction by weight of an ionized film forming binder which comprises at least a major proportion by weight of a resin derived from a synthetic carboxylic acid or anhydride; and (2) a minor fraction of a particulate, non- ionic hard resin which is not film forming on electrodeposition but is fusible at curing temperatures; and (d) sufficient water-soluble amino compound to maintain the resin mixture as a dispersion of anionic polyectrolyte in the composition, the weight ratio of resin mixture to pigment being at least 1À5: 1. In the example butyl acrylate, styrene and methacrylic acid were copolymerized with t-butyl perbenzoate and benzoyl peroxide in 2-butoxy ethanol and then reacted with trihydroxyl methyl amino methane and blended with water, diisopropanolamine, TiO 2 , kaolin clay and a vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer.
