Abstract
A composite coating is formed on a metallic surface by immersing it in a coating medium including a resin or paint and an additive capable of chemically reacting with the surface to form a corrosion-resistant or passivating substrate on the surface, and electrodepositing a coating of the resin or paint. The conversion coating may be formed prior to or simultaneously with the electrodeposited resin or paint coating and in the latter case the conversion coating formation is accelerated by the applied voltage. A degreasing agent may be included in the coating medium. As described the coating medium is an aqueous bath of an ammonia-stabilized phenolic alkyd water soluble resin pigmented with a vegetable carbon black and containing as the conversion coating component 8-hydroxyquinoline or tannic acid, the bath being used at 25 to 30 DEG C. and adjusted to pH 7.7 with ammonia. In examples the article is connected as anode with the coating tank as cathode and an applied D.C. voltage of 30 or 60 volts. The coated article is subsequently stoved, e.g. at 165 DEG C.
