Abstract

1394555 Electro-phoretic coating of chromium plated articles SHINTO PAINT CO Ltd and C UYEMURA & CO Ltd 14 May 1973 [15 May 1972(3)] 22928/73 Heading C7B A Cr-plated article is coated with a thermosetting resin film by electro-deposition, dipping the article as cathode in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a resin salt of at least one polyamino resin with a water-soluble organic and/or inorganic acid and passing D.C. under 10-300 volts. Prior to curing or baking e.g. at 200‹C, the coated article may be treated with an aqueous agent containing one or more anti-oxidants e.g. phenol derivatives or phosphite compounds; surfactants e.g. siliconic, anionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactants; organic solvents e.g. glycol ethers, alcohols, ketones or esters; acids, e.g. phthalic, trimellitic or pyromellitic anhydride or oxalic acid, or bases, e.g. dicyandiamide or dibutylamine. Prior to electrodeposition the Cr-plated surface may be pre-treated so that its electrode potential is nobler than - 0.42 volts, e.g. by anodic electrolysis in an aqueous solution of CrO 3 or (di) chromate, heating or exposing to air. The polyamine resin may be (a) a vinylic or acrylic copolymer containing amino as pendant groups, (b) a polymer made by reacting dialkylamine or dialkanolamine with an epoxy resin, (c) a polyester resin obtained by co-condensing alkanolamine with polybasic acid, (d) a polyurethane resin obtained by co-condensing alkanolamine with polyisocyanate, and/or (e) a terminal amino group-containing polyamide resin obtained by condensing excess polyamine with polybasic acid. The acid used with the resin may be formic, acetic, propionic, lactic, malonic, citric, hydrochloric, phosphoric and/or sulphuric acid. The anode may be of Pb, C or stainless steel.
