Abstract

1278385 Electro-deposition of paint FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 30 Oct 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 51640/70 Heading C7B In the electro-deposition of paint on a workpiece, a fraction of coating bath liquid extracted from the bath and having a paint concentration less than 50% of that in the bath is used to rinse the workpiece, rinse liquid being returned to the bath. As shown, article 19 is in electrical contact with bus-bar 37 via 25, making article 19 anodic whilst immersed in coating bath 13. Tank 11 is cathodic, as is also porous metal container 41; thus cations from the coating bath are attracted through waterpermeable membrane 43 (of cloth, plastics, metal or porous ceramic) so that a paint-solids-poor aqueous, dispersion forms within separation unit 40. This dispersion is pumped via 45, conduit 49 and spray heads 55 and 57 on to an article 27 which has emerged from the bath 13. The paint used may be a polycarboxylic acid resin binder dispersed within a water-soluble base, e.g. a soluble amine, ammonia, KOH, LiOH, or NaOH; an impressed potential of 50-500V and a 5-15 wt per cent resin concentration are used. It is also possible to use a cathodically depositable resin; in this case container 41 must be anodic, as must tank 11; the workpiece is cathodic.
