Abstract

1,148,921. Electrolytically removing scale from metal. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORP. April27, 1966 [April 30, 1965], No.18537/66. Heading C7B. In electrolytically removing scale from metal in an electrolytic bath, the metal is free from any electrical connections and passes or remains between or alongside electrodes with the current flow between electrodes respectively on opposite sides or on the same side of the strip, the electrolyte being an aqueous solution containing a chelating acid in a concentration of from 5 to 50% by weight and a base which forms a salt therewith, the base being either a nitrogen base in a concentration such that the pH of the solution is from 3 to 7 or an alkali metal hydroxide base in a concentration such that the PH of the solution is from 3 to 6. The metal may be ferrous metal such as steel strip, e.g. ready for tinning or galvanizing. Specified chelating acids (a), nitrogen bases (b), and alkali metal hydroxides (c) are (a) citric, glycolic, diglycolic, gluconic and tartaric acids, (b) NH 4 OH and amines such as alkanol amines (e.g. ethanol amine and triethanol amine) and alkyl amines (e.g. ethylamine and triethylamine) and (c) KOH and NaOH. Possible conditions include the use of A.C. or D.C.; a current density of 100 to 1300 amps. /sq.ft.; a solution temperature of 200‹F. to the boiling point; a solution which also includes nonionic surfactants, wetting agents, ionic surfactants, corrosion inhibitors and inorganic salts as desired, and agitation or circulation of the electrolyte during descaling. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates the descaling of steel strip (1) between electrodes (E 1 ) and circulation of electrolyte through a filter and solution reclamation system. Fig. 7 shows segmented electrodes E 4 with removable baffles 18 between segments which prevent current movement in directions away from a metal strip 17. Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) illustrate apparatus having baffles (21) which are hinged so as to accommodate metal strips (22 and 26) which are of different widths.
