Abstract

<PICT:0970436/C6-C7/1> In the electrolytic machining of metals using a high flow rate of electrolyte and high current density between the workpiece and electrode, the electrolyte is regenerated and freed from dissolved metals by plating these out in an electrolytic cell in circuit with the electrolyte supply and withdrawal flow line. Insoluble materials may also be filtered off, or centrifuged. A suitable electrolyte, e.g. potassium chloride and nitrate with Rochelle salt and potassium citrate as complexing agent, is fed from a tank 26 by a pump 24 to the gap between the workpiece W and electrode 10, from which it flows down a pipe 29 to a plating-out cell 28, and then returns to the storage tank 26. The plating-out cell has mounted therein anodes alternating with cathodes of relatively large area compared with the workpiece/tool and by bringing the plating cell in the same electrical supply circuit as the electro-machining unit, the current supply to the latter is maintained constant. Voltage regulators and spacing of the anodes and cathodes in the plating cell also maintain this constant current. The cathodes may be circular rotating discs bearing against bar scrapers to remove the deposits. The graphite anodes may have a corrugated surface. Acid may be fed in from a tank 56, and flow is governed by a pH probe 53. Similarly the regenerated electrolyte flowing into the storage tank 26 is rendered neutral by addition of alkali also controlled by a pH probe. The solid deposited metal residues which may contain Fe, Cu, and Ni are removed as sludge in a centrifuge 66. U.S.A. Specification 3,058,895 is referred to.
