1335546 Electro-phonetic coating P P G INDUSTRIES Inc 2 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969] 57331/70 Heading C7B The solids content (comprising ionically solubilised synthetic resin) of dragout-containing electro-phoretic deposition rinse water is concentrated, for disposing of or returning to the electrophoretic deposition bath, by subjecting the rinse water to ultrafiltration to pass by an aqueous effluent while retaining the solubilised resin. The aqueous effluent, e.g. comprising water and solutes of M. W. below 1000 (excess amines, alkali metal ions, phosphates, chromates, sulphates, solvents and dissolved CO 2 ), may also be returned to the bath, or used as rinsing agent to remove dragout from electrocoated articles. The ultrafilter used may be microporous or diffusive, e.g. an anisotropic membrane; the aqueous effluent may be forced through the barrier using a pressure of between 10 and 150 psi. The resin may be a solubilised polybasic or polyacid resin, e. g. a polycarboxylic acid resin in which the base is an amine or KOH. The articles being coated may be of Fe, steel, Cu, Zn, brass, Sn, Ni, Cr, Al or impregnated paper. Many examples of resins which include reaction products of (semi) drying oil fatty acid esters with dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, or amine-aldehyde condensation products are specified. Pigments such as red iron oxide, lead silicate, MnO 2 , anthracite and SrCrO 4 may be included. Specifications 1335545, 1301515, 1149153 and 1112062 are referred to.
