Abstract

1,134,000. Electro-phoretically coating anodized aluminium. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Nov.9, 1967 [Nov. 22, 1966], No.50995/67. Heading C7B. A thermosetting resin is electro-phoretically deposited on and into an anodized aluminium surface whereby a strongly adherent sealing film is obtained which is coextensive with said anodized surface, excess resin loosely adhering to said film is removed and the resin film is cured. The resin film may be deposited from a bath comprising a thermosetting resin containing a plurality of carboxylic acid groups and sufficient watersoluble, amino compound to render said resin water soluble, the pH of the bath being 7-10; e. g. the bath may comprise an alkyl resin formed by the reaction between trimellitic anhydride, soya fatty acid, hydrogenated bisphenol-A and pentanediol-1, 5 rendered water soluble by aqueous ammonia. Other suitable resin materials and amino compounds are listed in the Specification. The anodized layer may be formed using a sulphuric acid electrolyte following dipping in a bath containing phosphoric and nitric acids, and the anodized surface may be hot water sealed prior to application of the electro-phoretic coating. The electro-phoretically sealed anodized aluminium surface may be subsequently coloured by baking paints thereonto.
