Abstract

579,165. Coating surfaces. ESSEX AERO, Ltd., CROSS, R. J., and MAILLARD, E. F. Nov. 14, 1942, No. 16137. [Class 95] Articles of magnesium, or of magnesium-rich alloys, are protected against corrosion by first treating them with a dilute nitric acid solution of an alkali metal nitrate and an alkali metal dichromate and, after the resultant film has dried, treating them with a coating composition containing an oil-soluble phenol-formaldehyde synthetic resin, and finally drying with or without heating. The coating composition may contain also a water-repellant material such as stearic acid or aluminium stearate, and a baking temperature of 130‹-250‹C. may be used. Before treatment to produce the initial film, the surfaces may be cleaned with phosphoric or nitric acid. Specification 579,164, [Group II], is referred to.
